Tracing the family history of the Medici from its beginning, this tour starts at the elegant courtyard of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, the main residence of the first branch of the family. Commissioned towards 1444 by the family’s patriarch, Cosimo the Eldest, the building is relatively modest and austere. You’ll hear stories of its famous residents: Lorenzo the Magnificent and his friend Michelangelo.
After a stop outside the family’s private San Lorenzo Church, you’ll head to the second palace of the Medici that is also the Florentine town hall, the Palazzo Vecchio. The once medieval building had a Renaissance style facelift when another Cosimo, Cosimo I de’ Medici, moved in towards 1540. Here, we’ll admire the façade where stands David and visit the courtyard fully painted with fresco for the wedding of Cosimo’s son and the Princess of Austria.
We’ll then cross the Arno River following the “Vasari Corridor”, the 1km private suspended passageway for the Medici family to reach their last but the grandest palace: Palazzo Pitti. Accompanied by your expert guide, you’ll explore the palace interiors and experience Medici’s luxurious lifestyle, admiring their unequalled art collection in the Palatine Gallery. From there also unveils a magnificent view of the Boboli Gardens.
This tour takes you off the beaten track and offers a new way to explore Florence. After 3 hours, you’ll be equipped with a deep understanding not only of the Medici Family, but also of the city’s rich history and arts.
