The itinerary
With the priority ticket, you’ll start off straight inside the most spectacular monument in Rome, the Colosseum. Your expert history guide will breathe new life into the gruesome entertainment the ancient Romans enjoyed here – from gladiator fights, wild animal hunts, to mass executions under the gaze of the impassive emperors! You’ll also discover what went on behind the scenes, including the role these games played in the ancient roman society and the stories on the amazing machinery that made the spectacles so legendary.
Our tour of Ancient Rome will go beyond the gladiators in an in-depth stroll on the Palatine Hill. Often overlooked by tourists, this was however the very birth place of the Eternal City. It was here that the legendary founder of Rome, Romulus, and his twin brother Remus, were raised by a she-wolf. The lush green hill offers an escape from the heat and hides some of the city’s oldest and most beautiful ruins. We’ll not miss the Flavian Palace, the Baths of Septimius Severus, and the Stadium of Domitian.
Next stop is the ruin of the Roman Forum, the center stage of everyday life in Ancient Rome. With stories that excite our imagination, we’ll hear the heated political debates in the circular hall of the Senate and see the everlasting sacred flame protected by the Vestal Virgins. We’ll visit the temples of the Roman gods and their transformation in the early days of Christianity. An once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about history in the very place where it took place!

My wife, son and I all enjoyed the Rome tour of the Colosseum and Palatine hill more than we could have imagined thanks to Maurizio. The tour was at 2:30 and it was very warm (35 degrees Celsius), so we had a lot of water with us and drank a lot before we met Maurizio. My wife and I really worked to fit this tour in as we felt our son (9 years old) really needed to see Rome as it is such a big part of world history. Our time was limited so we selected Localers as we had had good luck with the Company in Lyon. Maurizio was early and we started right away. He warned us of the issues with heat and asked us to let him know if we were having any problems. Halfway through he even bought us some frozen water! Maurizio was incredible!! His knowledge of the Coliseum, Palatine hill, the six other hills, the chronological order of the leaders of Rome, which one did what, when the buildings were built, why they were built, and how various events and times affected history. Just so much wonderful information which made us want to know more! Maurizio’s knowledge of history including the way events affected things today was astonishing. There was truly not a question asked that he was unable to answer extensively. This included inquiries by our son. Again, Maurizio was a great tour leader, from his vast knowledge to the heat he warned us about for the three-hour walk – the concern he had in showing us where to fill up our waters and then buying us frozen water which we refilled and refilled. Everything he knew and explained. We loved him putting everything in context and him just knowing so much. He was wonderful. Thank you for setting it up for us.
