The itinerary

Your journey starts in front of Saint Mark’s Basilica, a splendid monument carved out of multicolored marbles and embellished with precious spoils of wars to show off the power and wealth of the Venetian Republic. Your private historian will guide your eyes to admire the unique design of the basilica: the Greek cross plan crowned by five cupolas according to Byzantine models, a witness to Venice’s past as Europe’s gateway to the East.

With our skip-the-line pass, you’ll then arrive inside the basilica to marvel at its dazzling interior covered by mosaics. Your guide will demystify the scenes depicted and the eight centuries of construction that went behind. You’ll also discover the chef-d’oeuvre of St. Mark’s treasury – the Pala d’Oro (the Golden Pall), a medieval gilt altar adorned with more than a thousand precious gems.

The next half of the tour will take you to the Doge’s Palace. Not only a beautiful building of Venetian Gothic, it was the political center of the old Republic presided by the elected rulers called dogi. You’ll be amazed by the sheer size of the Grand Council Chamber and the splendid interiors painted by great Venetian masters like Titian and Tintoretto. It was also in this palace that some of the most famous prisoners in history, such as Casanova, were interrogated and taken down to the adjacent jail across the Bridge of Sighs, where they would sigh at a last view of Venice before their imprisonment.
