Venice boasts unparalleled wealth in history and artistic heritage; its many monuments and museums are worth an in-depth exploration alongside an expert. Localers have thus got together a top-class team of art historian guides for our museum tours in Venice. Fully accredited guides and experienced educators, they pride themselves not only on their abundance of knowledge, they are also skilled at guiding untrained eyes through the artworks while explaining the truths behind, all adapted to the age and interests of visitors.
Skipping the line, you’ll enter through the modest façade to a grand gallery filled with visual drama. A former chapterhouse converted to Venice’s official art school in the 18th Century, the Accademia Gallery continues to display paintings in chronological fashion and allows us to discover the evolution of Venetian art just like its art students of the past.
Firstly, you’ll go upstairs to see the starting point of Venetian art in the gold altarpieces of the Middles Ages. You’ll recognize the precocious flair for color that later defined the Venetian style. But it was the elegant Madonna and Child of Giovanni Bellini that heralded the Renaissance in Venice. His paintings radiate natural light that is unequaled even by masters in Florence or Rome.
Further along, paintings of Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese mark the golden age of Venetian Renaissance. The showstopper is Veronese’s monumental Feast in the House of Levi. This painting was originally called Last Supper until the Inquisition condemned the artist for showing irrelevant details of dogs, dwarves, and drunkards at the Lord’s last moment!
Besides religious subjects you’ll discover historic depictions of the city and its inhabitants. Among them is the Procession in St Mark’s Square that shows just how little Venice's iconic piazza has changed over five centuries. You’ll also gaze at the flickering reflections of the Grand Canal captured by the 18th-century romantics like Canaletto. Taking a journey into the past, you’ll finish the tour with a new perspective, admiring the Venice of today on a deeper level.
