An unparalleled figure of the Renaissance, Michelangelo left his enduring mark in history with his chisels. It was in Florence he grew to be an artist and where most of his masterpieces are proudly on display. This tour will show you the best mature works of the artist in two must-see museums of Florence, while picking up the traces of his life in the historical heart of the city.
This tour starts with the magnificent Accademia Gallery. Our priority access puts you directly in the current home of Michelangelo’s David. You’ll learn how the young talent kicked off his career in Florence and chiseled out the world’s most famous statue at only 26 years of age. In the gallery, you’ll also discover the artist’s non-finito (incomplete) yet monumental sculptures, and the Slaves, who seem to be struggling to break free from their marble block.
The next step to deepen our understanding of the artist is to visit the Medici Chapels. An often overlooked monument, it houses the New Sacristy fully orchestrated by Michelangelo for the family tombs of the Medici. Your guide will demystify the artist’s profound philosophy behind the elegant sculptures and the innovate space.
Stepping out of the museums, you are in an open book of Michelangelo’s biography called Florence. You’ll see the Duomo and the Orsanmichele Church in the eyes of the artist. The tour ends with the copy of David that marks the entrance of the town hall, where it has been serving as a symbol of Florence for centuries.
